Have you considered doing any teaching? They just wanted some songs to get on the radio. I guess I was just in denial about it, like, You gotta be kidding me. [Journey had] just reworked our partnership. Mmm-hmm. They have machines for all the different muscles in your body. I just thought it was part of the aging process. Like, Hey, man, that was great! It would really slow me down." It might change a little bit in the middle, but there's a definite lead-off and a definite end. With what you make off the old stuff, could you afford to retire at this point? The reunion, thenthat was two years after? That lineup of Journey ended up becoming one of the biggest bands in the world. Hes not just a Steve Perry emulator. But they went on to make a lot of money. I had an offer to join the Yardbirds, with Jimmy Page, when they did their last tour, but I'd just started Retaliation. I wanted to play. ), blues, rock, and hard rock. At certain times, I've had a drum lose its tone because it has been dropped and the shell has cracked, or something has gone wrong and it's deader than the other drums and I've had to replace It. We came off the road for several months to work in the studio, and I thought maybe I should try some other way to keep myself feeling fit, because I was feeling tired and weird all of the time. I was part of a band that saved my life. When that audience wanted an encore, and they would not let you leave, it was just so gratifying. It was crazy. I just wanna quit. I like the idea of a drum kit, meaning that when you hit something, you have a percussive feel. Sykes, is one of the co-writers of nine track's from the albums, but was later on, along with drummer Aynsley Dunbar and bassist Neil Murray, kicked out of the band. Called Patiently. I used to always push for that when I was playing on stage. Once you've made your name, you can go into a band, say the Jefferson Starship, and people will say, "There's Aynsley Dunbar. As soon as I went backstage after the Berkeley concert, the crew and band told me that Aynsley and Terry were there hanging out. I cant tell you when, but Im gonna get it done. It was suggested that I could tour and sit on a stool. And some funk. Grand Wazoo was charts. They were certainly amenable to it when I joined them. But when I went through Liverpool on a tour with Zappa in 1971, out of all the people I knew in Liverpool, he was the only one who actually turned up backstage to shake my hand and say how well I was playing. That way, when I go on stage, there's no sloppiness. AD: When Craig writes a song, he will actually make a demo tape with a drum track on it, which is great because it gives me ideas. Reviewers can curse about them and reconstruct their ideas about them or give you a lousy write up, but as long as the solo went down well that night, you can't believe anything a critic says. No. And the pressure of walking in front of an audience every night, and wanting to be what you know they want you to be, and what you want to be for them, and to have this silly little thing in your throat thats about as neurotic as you are, is difficult. So my drum solo lasted about 20 minutes. I think the beginning of the end was when Neal started his solo career. Well, Steve came out with us and started hangin outhe was hangin with me, actually, and we were roomin together, and I pulled out an acoustic guitar, and one of the first songs we wrote, in about a half an hour, was Patiently. And that just kinda came out of nowhere. Then the band's ego got too much for me to cope with and I had to dump them. Its been your band longer than it was ever Steves band. Lets roll. You mentioned Aynsley Dunbar, who is such a great, yet often overlooked, drummer. And so I started a long process, seeing many doctors, and the guys got impatient. But then, the grass is always greener. But I didnt see it until the first time it aired, that Sunday night. You can be working 10, 12, 14 hours every day. I still miss his playing. We were ready to go and rehearse and do the first video, and I was on a ten-day break before we started rehearsals. I really, honestlyand you must print thisI really dont want to respond to what theyre doing, because what theyre doing is none of my business. When I did the "Stable of Stars"' ad for Ludwig, I was talking to a lot of people l didn't know, and they were the drummers for certain bands. I called Jonathan around 95, and talked to him on the phone. I went along with it. I got a phone call from Jon, and I could tell Neal was on the phone, cause I can tell when the line levels down, and I could hear him breathing, I think. Because I am gonna get this done, eventually. But I needed to be ready to lay down and do this thing. And look at the choices he had! And then when they started editing with the lyricslike on Just a small-town girl, theyre cuttin across to the wife, and theyre cuttin to everybody, as appropriately as the lyrics canwow. If you go back to that, what are you going back to now? So thats why I said, Maybe we really are done. Id left to find my life, once before, gone back to it, to try to reclaim something we once had, and then we kinda fell into that same place again. Home alone and going Now what? Knowing it was over. I dont know. Which was my original motivation, back in the early 70s. Once I lock into a song, the rest of the band comes together fast, so I've decided that it's my job to learn the arrangement and then just play it. So he sat in on two songs and then he came back and sat in my car and started chatting about session work in Los Angeles and how much money could be made and how I could make a good living out of it. **You went on to make a string of hit records with Steve. I gotta get out for a while. And they said, Well, what do you mean? And I said, Thats exactly what I mean, is what Im saying. I looked around and realized that my whole life had become everything Id worked so hard to be, and when I came back to have a regular life, I had to go find one. RM: And he, in turn, will take you to different places; RM: This all ties in with what you were telling me the other night about how you base most of what you do on listening to the melody. I still am, somewhat. Ive read three reviews in my entire career, and they were all so painful that I decided not to read em anymore. I love doin it. I just love it. But he was nice enough to call me, so I thought I'd go on down and listen to him. We have children together, which are the songs we wrote together, and we have a vested interest, as songwriters, in where they go and where they dont go. Do you think you'll have your own group again sometime? Im not sure what Im gonna do with it yet, but I got a lot of material, and a lot of it I really like. Youre looking at it in a deep chronological way. All the other guys were about 40 and were married. Cause I thought it was silly. But along with this, you have to print that I cant blame them. The only thing is, it doesn't look like a drum kit. It was a wonderful experience. I used a small, jazz Ludwig kit for the Grand Wazoo and Waka/Jawaka aibums-a little 20" bass, an 8 x 12 tom-tom, and a pair of 14 x 14 floor toms. Ive slowed down a bit. After that, I'm on a different continent and David and John take an absolute eon to do the vocals and all the guitar tracks and they use all kinds of different studios. It sounds like me, theyve said. RM: Who were the drummers you were listening. He started his professional career in Derry Wilkie and the Pressmen in 1963. So that night we got a doctor to give me a shot. It feels better. And the legacy continues, with Arnel. AD: Yeah. He didn't have any idea of which side of the beat he was on half of the time. RM: I presume you could have your choice of drum companies. Weve always had a difference of opinion in that area. I moved over there. All these years, its funnyI never really felt part of it. I found that I liked using two bass drums. I still feel like I'mlearning to play. I just needed to stop. I've been with them for about four years now. It's a situation that you have to grow into. But thats okay. But you gotta know that Herbie built that band around Neal, and Gregg Rolie too, and then brought in Aynsley and Ross. AD: I basically understand what I should be doing by common sense. _[A few days after I talked to Perry, I did a follow-up interview with Neal Schon, Journeys co-founder and lead guitarist, in which we discussed some of the same issues Perry brought up. My first solo thing, I think, was maybe six, seven years later. God bless him, Aynsley [Dunbar] came in and redid it all. Im just happy to be on the right track now, for once in a row. And Jon was telling me, We want to know what you wanna do. Only one night did I have to have a shot of B12 with an anti-inflammatory. Even while I was doing the solo album, even after it was successfulin my heart of hearts, I was never gonna leave Journey. It's a great interview that gives insight into how mega-bands really work. They don't understand it. . When someones fingers get calluses on them, the guitar doesnt hurt so bad. So[long pause] when we did the VH1 thing, I said there was quite some time where I never really felt part of the band.
