Water color has improved to about 1 plus feet of visibility. After that for end of week and weekend, the forecast is back to cold temps and another round of measurable snow. Deep and slow drifts and swings are rewarded with hard fighting fresh steelhead. A few good browns reported to be hooked up yesterday on the Oak. Also a few more brown trout hook ups have been reported, but its plenty earlier for that with lots of good trout action ahead of us. Small boat trollers and casters both in on the action with glow hardware and/or plugs. So conditions real nice, especially considering how dry summer was and how some of this fall has been so far. When high flows drop and/or cold flows warm and/or dirty water clears then anglers who can make good drifts or swings get in on the action. Hungry post spawn browns like this semi golden male are eager to bite your spoon, plug or fly. No big concentration of fish in any one spot that we know of, except for the stranded for now overflow fish. This latest rain has come uncharacteristically from the east so to the west may be in slightly better shape then to the east. We are hearing of a few more browns now in the Oak, especially thru yesterday. Warm temps are forecast today and tomorrow and seasonable thru the beginning part of the weekend. Here on the Niagara Frontier, it was heaviest and there are lesser accumulations south of here. The Wolcott Creek off Furnace Road had some late season kings. On Saturday we had a father and his 2 sons (pictured right) ready for some bonding and good fishing. Trolling in a west direction was tough as the current was making it difficult. Downstream slow water spots are for sure locked up and even upstream all the way to the dam is frozen except for a rivulet here and there or if you were to break something open. The bite was not hot and heavy but we picked at a few steelhead as we approached the 30 line. Colder temps could bring back some icing conditions esp in the smaller waterways if lower flows prevail. Id say Im hearing about 50/50 in good/tough fishing. This entices more brown trout and steelhead to enter and remain in these waterways, improving fish spawning conditions and expanding angling opportunities. You can also change some of your preferences. Flows can fluctuate by several feet in a short period of time. The LOC started Friday and runs until September 6thLabor Day. Chance of mixed bag precipitation and snow thru tomorrow and early Thursday. These 23 & 25 lb Salmon were caught in 450 to 500 fow.40 to 120 down, using Dipseys 180 to 220 just slightly west of the Oak. And we barely got clipped by the worst of it like SW of the area around Buffalo got it! Any future precipitation could raise flows and bring back dirty water color. All that cooler water we have again in the Oak could surely be spreading out the fish and drifts are going to need to be down and slow for best hook up chances. More will with higher water. For now on the Oak, anglers seem to be hooking up on a few steelhead nearest the dam that came along with the higher flows of a few weeks ago mixed in with a handful of fresh fish trickling in thru the downstream fast water. Lots of anglers anxious to get out there, and a few are, but the Kings are pretty much following a normal script as far as timing. Reports of lowering flows in Johnson Creek and we are unsure why? Small and Largemouth Bass are also abundant, aggressive and eager to bend your rod. Im so sorry, sorry you needed a helmet to fish with me 20.
